GOSHEN — Even after 50 years of marriage, Goshen’s Ronald Nelson knows how to surprise his wife. Ronald proved he could do just that this past Friday when what his wife Marsha thought was going to be a small 50th Anniversary celebration at their local church turned out to be a surprise vow renewal ceremony complete with bridesmaids, grooms, a fancy wedding dress and one proud husband. “We got married in 1962, but that was kind of a tough time for us back then, and we didn’t have a lot of money, so we really didn’t have a big wedding,” Nelson said. “We’ve had a good time these past 50 years, but my wife always said she wanted a white wedding. So I decided since this was our 50th anniversary, I was going to give her one.” Bound and determined to see that idea through, Nelson started planning for the big day early last year, reserving space at their local church, scoping out bridal shops, getting together a guest list and sending out invitations. “I did it when I could do it, a little bit here and a little bit there, and nobody knew about it but me,” Nelson said with a laugh. “I lined up the church in the latter part of February, and they just thought it was a great idea. Then these last couple of weeks I’ve been working at the church getting the decorations and everything up, and then I was also passing out invitations I had made up. So everything was ready, and she had no clue.” Thinking they were just heading down to the church for a small anniversary get-together, Marsha arrived at the Plymouth United Church of Christ in Goshen at 5 p.m. Friday ready to take a few pictures and chat with friends and family. What she found, however, was something very, very different. “I was so surprised,” Marsha said of the ceremony. “I had no idea at all. When he handed me my dress, I teared up.” With her brand new wedding dress on, Marsha and Ronald renewed their wedding vows surrounded by more than 100 of their closest friends and family. “Our two sons were there in tuxes and they walked her down the aisle,” Ronald said. “Our daughter-in-law was also there, we had two friends of mine who were ushers, my granddaughter was our flower girl, and my grandson was the ring bearer. It turned out just really neat.” And if you ask Marsha, she couldn’t agree more. “It was a good day,” Marsha said, “…a very good day.”
